Mental health services across two major hospitals in Northamptonshire have been awarded an outstanding overall rating following a rigorous inspection by the Care Quality Commission. The review focused on acute wards for working age adults and psychiatric intensive care units located at Berrywood Hospital in Northampton and St Mary’s Hospital in Kettering. Beyond the general success of the facilities, the Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was specifically praised for being well-led and effective, while maintaining high standards of safety and responsiveness.
Gemma Berry, the CQC deputy director of Mental Health in the Midlands, attributed these results to a powerful leadership team that has fostered a culture of transparency and constant improvement. Inspectors noted that staff members showed a deep understanding of the link between physical and mental wellbeing, allowing them to spot health risks early and stop patients from deteriorating. This innovative approach extended to those with neurodivergent needs, where the introduction of specialized sensory rooms and equipment helped reduce distress for many patients.
Feedback from patients and their caregivers was described as overwhelmingly positive throughout the process. Those receiving treatment characterized the clinical teams as kind, professional, and deeply supportive during some of the most vulnerable periods of their lives. The commission highlighted that care plans were not just comprehensive but truly person centered, meaning staff remained proactive in adapting treatments to fit individual requirements rather than relying on a one size fits all model.
Ms. Berry concluded that the hardworking staff and leaders should feel immense pride in their achievements, stating that the report serves as a testament to their dedication. These accolades come at a significant time for the trust, which recently announced that it has expanded its reach by taking over patient care at what was formerly St Andrew’s Hospital.
