SSM Health supports Fondy Food Pantry Food for Thought program

2 min read

SSM Health is stepping up to fight childhood hunger in Fond du Lac County with a generous twenty thousand dollar donation to the Fondy Food Pantry. This community health gift will directly benefit the Food for Thought program, an initiative that ensures roughly eleven hundred children across several local school districts have access to nutritious food outside of their normal school hours. By providing weekend food bags and daily snacks, the program targets those students who rely heavily on school meals and might otherwise go hungry over the weekend or between classes.

Now entering its fifteenth year, Food for Thought serves students in the Fond du Lac, Eden, Campbellsport, and Ripon districts. These efforts include everything from carefully curated meal bags following USDA guidelines to dedicated snack bins for older students and specialized support for homeless elementary children. David Diaz, the executive director of the Fondy Food Pantry, emphasizes that proper nutrition is fundamentally linked to student success, noting that well-fed children show better attendance, improved behavior, and higher academic performance because they can actually focus on their lessons.

The timing of the grant comes as food insecurity remains a pressing issue for families throughout the region. Between rising grocery costs and general economic instability, many households are turning to food banks for the first time. In 2025 alone, the pantry assisted nearly forty two thousand individuals and welcomed about fifteen hundred new families into its system. Beyond Food for Thought, the organization manages various services including home deliveries and a free walk-in pantry to meet this growing demand.

Shane Smith, market president for SSM Health in Fond du Lac, explained that this partnership represents a broader commitment to public wellness that extends far beyond hospital walls. He noted that ensuring kids start their school day properly nourished is a critical component of overall community health. With millions of Americans still facing nutritional gaps according to Feeding America data, these localized partnerships serve as a vital safety net for vulnerable youth and their families.
